Evaluation: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Evaluation: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Evaluation: What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Evaluation: How did you use new media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stage?

Final Cut Pro
We used this software on the macs in order to edit of videos. It was slightly daunting at first using this software as I had never used it before. However, having completed our product I would be happy to use this software again as it achieves a professional product with very few difficulties. The editing was made effortless with this programme as it enabled us to chop and cut bits of footage with great ease.
Photoshop
We used Photoshop to construct our digipak and poster. Having used this software already whilst constructing my music magazine last year, I felt confident using this programme again. However, as we were following the simplistic conventions of the genre, we did not need to use many of the tools Photoshop has to offer as our poster and digipak was quite straight forward.
Survey Monkey
I was made familiar with this website last year after conducting an audience survey for my music magazine. It enables you to create a survey that can be sent through email or be posted on social networking sites or blogs. I was able to use this software with ease in order to acquire audience feedback on both the dance genre and of music video itself. This is a very useful piece of media technology that has been crucial in our research process. I would not hesitate to use this website again.
Slide Share
This website allows you to upload power point presentations on to your blog so they can be downloaded and shared. This website has been useful throughout the evaluation stage of the coursework as I have been able to present my answers in presentation form, using pictures and clips from my video and ancillary products.
Blogger
Blogger has been a completely new technology in itself to me as I used tumblr last year to record my progress. Even though I would reluctant about using this blogging site at first I have been pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to use.

YouTube

This was a useful piece of online software as it allows users to upload videos from various devices and sources, from mobile phones to good quality cameras. It was vital in the Construction and Research stage as it allowed us to upload current dance music videos to our blogger accounts, such as Feel So Close by Calvin Harris and also Changed the Way You Kiss Me by Example. This also emphasises the fact that Blogger and Youtube have worked hand in hand together in order to produce research which is not just evident by the textual analysis, but has also allowed us to gain this visual element and overall allowed us to produce well rounded research blog posts. It also allowed us to upload our video online, which in turn allowed us to upload it to blogger and also gain feedback from viewers, therefore Youtube has been beneficial at most stages of the production.

Poster Final Sketch

Digipak Final Sketch

Album Cover Mock Up

This is an initial idea for our album cover. We have chosen to incorporate the simplistic style is reoccurring throughout the dance genre. We have taken influences from both Calvin Harris singles of this year "Bounce" and "Feel so close", and also the Chase and Status album "No More Idols". The yellow and white coloured font is something which is prominent in much of the dance genre, especially in album covers and posters. Calvin Harris' previous album "I Created Disco" featured a considerable amount of black and white on the album cover and the advertising poster for the album which reinforces the simplistic style. These colours will help consumers to immediately identify a connection between the visuals they see on the cover and the colours associated with the dance genre. The image used in this initial idea is not specifically what we are trying to replicate, but it does convey a simplistic sense of love. We plan to take a picture of our couple in the Old Tannery, which will really emphasise "finding love in a hopeless place".

Location 3: Brecks Lane

Brecks Lane, Strensall, York: This location is close to location 1, The Old Tannery so it was ideal to shoot here. We chose this location because it is an empty, single track road which represents a sense of hopelessness and loneliness. We plan to use this location for only a short scene between the Tannery scenes and Underpass scenes. We feel that this location will convey the narrative well and will give the audience a sense of emotion that they want according to audience research.  The location is a public road so we will have no problems with gaining access to the site, however, it will be important to stay alert as traffic does come down this road.

Location 2: Bishopthorpe Underpass

Bishopthorpe Underpass: This is another gritty, urban location that is decorated with graffiti used by skaters, rollerbladers and cyclists. The graffiti here ties in with the edgy mise en scene we are trying to convey through our video and the fact that it is a road underpass typically links to the dance genre.  The graffiti will provide a good backdrop for many of the performance scenes and will inject some colour into what we presume will be a dark, gritty video. There should be no problems with shooting in this location as it is a public footpath. The only problem we may face is concerning lighting as it can be quite dark which could affect the quality of footage, but overall we feel that this is another perfect location to portray the image we are going for.

Location 1: The Old Tannery

The Old Tannery: Strensall, York. This is a derelict Tannery we thought would be an ideal location to shoot most of our video. We feel that the run down and abandoned building best represents hopelessness and the idea of having no ambition in life. Many of the ‘love’ scenes will be shot at this location which will emphasise the lyrics “we found love in a hopeless place”. The mise en scene of the building will appeal to the audience as it is typical of the gritty and raw settings used in dance videos and will appeal to their emotive nature. This location may be perfect, however, we could face problems gaining access as the land is up for sale and sectioned off. We are currently in the process of getting permission to enter the site.

Project Update

As a group we have made good progress in our ideas and storyboards. However, a member of our group, Joe, is leaving college so will no longer be able to continue with the music video. We are now down to three members, Me, Nathan and Natalie, meaning we will all have to take on a heavier work load and may encounter difficulties in filming. As Joe was going to provide the actors for our video we will now have to cast new actors. Even though we have had a few obstacles to overcome, we have remained positive and focused. As well as this, Calvin Harris has recently released a new video featuring Rihanna called “We Found Love”. As a group we were greatly influenced by the video and how it has been shot. Because of this we have decided as a group to change our song as it conveys a deeper meaning and suites the narrative of our storyboard.
